Therapies

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is a non-surgical method that stimulates the wound repair process in injured ligaments, tendons and degenerative joints. It works by injecting nutrients that simulates the body’s natural healing ability through the release of one’s own growth factors which signal repair and regenerate.

The body’s pain sensory nerves are abundant in the ligaments and tendons and damage to these structures causes the debilitating pain that most people, who have chronic injuries, experience. If these structures don’t heal, which is common because of their poor blood supply, the surrounding muscle must contract to try to support the unstable joint. This eventually leads to additional pain and tightness in the over-worked muscles. Over-worked muscle spasms lead to accelerated joint degeneration.
If the injured structures are repaired, the joint becomes stable, the degeneration stops, the muscles relax and the chronic pain goes away. Prolotherapy repairs these injured structures.

Anyone experiencing chronic pain would benefit from regenerative Prolotherapy.

Arthritis pain
Low back pain
Leg pain
Herniated discs
Sciatica
Hip, knee, ankle and foot pain
Neck pain
Wrist, elbow and shoulder pain
Headaches
TMJ (jaw) pain
Post injury/Trauma pain
Fibromyalgia
Sports injuries
Loose joints (chronic “cracking”)
Tendonitis
Golfer elbow/tennis elbow
Rotator cuff injuries
Post fracture treatment

The number of treatments necessary to heal the injured tissue varies per individual as age, lifestyle, nutritional status, smoking, degree of injury, age of injury all play a factor in the rate of healing. Typically, treatment takes between 6-10 sessions, which average one treatment every 3 to 6 weeks.

Neural Therapy

Neural Therapy is a nervous system regulating therapy. Several health conditions are a result of inappropriate communication between nerves, blood vessels and cells. Neural Therapy restores proper autonomic nervous system function and rebalances the body’s internal communication to promote healing. It is very effective in treating a wide variety of conditions using an injection technique into and around nerves, scars, muscles and pain zones. It works through healing the nervous system, improving blood flow and boosting the immune system in irritated, damaged, and sick tissues. Because of its ability to regulate the nervous system, it can have a healing effect on most conditions.

Some of the more common conditions treated with Neural Therapy include:

Chronic pain
Post-traumatic pain
Muscle spasm
Joint pain
Whiplash
Head, neck and back pain
Headaches
Sinusitis
Anxiety
Stress
Vertigo/Tinnitus
Post surgical pain
Digestive health issues
Urinary tract issues
Organ dysfunctions
Scar tissues

The number of treatments varies per individual and condition. Typically, therapeutic results are achieved with in 10 treatments, which average once to twice per week. Desirable results are best achieved when integrated into a complete health program.

Intravenous Nutrient Infusions

A Nutrient Infusion is an intravenous delivery system for vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and other natural medicines in specific formulations to optimize the body’s healing ability. Nutrients often included are vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, magnesium, calcium, zinc, chromium, copper, selenium, glutathione and alpha lipoic acid. The Nutrient Infusion provides nutrients in therapeutic doses in order to saturate and replenish the body’s cells in a very efficient and effective way. The intravenous route of therapy, bypasses the stomach acid, the bowel mucosal barrier and eliminates all problems of absorption. It allows expeditious delivery of these essential elements in therapeutic doses, concurrently and in the proper proportions for maximum synergistic effect. Nutrient Infusions can play an important role in the pursuit of improved health, especially for those experiencing disease, injury, or recovery from surgeries.

Some of the more common conditions where Nutrient Infusions are advantageous include:

Cardiovascular disease
Chronic fatigue
Fibromyalgia
Vitamin deficiency
Autoimmune diseases
Multiple Sclerosis
Parkinson’s
Anxiety
Stress
Depression
Migraine or tension headaches
General immune boosting
Gut malabsorption
Support to cancer patients
Muscle spasm
Asthma
Hives
Allergic Rhinitis
Acne
Congestive Heart Failure
Angina
Ischemic Vascular Disease
Acute infections
Hepatitis
Senile Dementia
Reduction or elimination of the need for pharmaceutical drugs
Enhancing athletic performance

NOTE: Drinking plenty of water and having food in the stomach is advised before coming to the office to have a Nutrient Infusion. A general flush feeling, light-headedness and/or a taste of the vitamins is sometimes experienced by patients but is considered to be a normal and safe sensation.

Some nutrients may also be administered through an intramuscular injection.

Chelation therapy

Chelation Therapy is the removal of accumulated toxic heavy metals from the body which are an underlying cause of many chronic diseases. In the modern world we are all exposed daily to relatively high levels of many poisonous heavy metals including lead, mercury, arsenic, aluminum and cadmium. Depending on where you live, your occupation, and lifestyle, your body’s toxicity levels can vary. Chelation Therapy can be administered intravenously or orally depending on the individuals needs. The best way to determine the body’s burden is with a provoked urinary challenge test.

EDTA Chelation is the treatment of choice for removing high levels of lead in the body. Anyone born before 1980 was exposed to lead from the gasoline used at that time. Other examples of sources include chemicals in processed foods, pesticides and herbicides, tap water, personal care products (cosmetics, perfumes, shampoos, soaps), paints before 1991, batteries and industrial chemicals.

DMSA and DMSA Chelation is usually used to remove mercury, aluminum, cadmium and other metals from the body. These metals store in the body’s fatty tissues throughout the years and contribute to various health issues. The most common sources include chemicals in processed foods, pesticides and herbicides, personal care products, dental amalgam fillings, metal workers, art supplies, vaccinations, industrial pollution and contaminated foods.

Heavy metal toxicity is a main contributing factor in many long term degenerative diseases and is the treatment of choice for conditions such as:
Atherosclerosis
High blood pressure
Coronary Artery Disease
Myocardial Infarction
Cerebrovascular diseases,
Peripheral Vascular Disease
Arthritis
Autoimmune disease
Cancer
Asthma and other lung conditions
Chronic fatigue
Fibromyalgia
Autism
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Multiple Sclerosis
Dementia

Clinical Nutrition

Diet is a major contributing factor in any person’s health, wellness and healing ability. Clinical Nutrition is the use of dietary modification and high-quality professional supplements to promote healthy physiological and biochemical reactions within the body. Every structure and cell in your body is constantly breaking down and needs to be rebuilt. The body uses what you eat as building blocks to regenerate itself. There are varying opinions on proper diet and use of nutritional supplements. It is often hard to interpret all the information and know what’s best for one’s specific needs. It is very important to have a trusting relationship with an experienced, licensed professional who can assess your needs and make strategic dietary and nutrient recommendations to help you achieve your goals.

Positive clinical results are most seen in those individuals that take their nutrition seriously. Our core recommended diet is consists primarily of organic, hypoallergenic, GMO free, free range, grass feed, hormone free, wild, raw foods from mother earth. Making dietary changes to support health and healing can often be very difficult as we are creatures of habit. A new way of preparing food and eating takes time, energy and dedication to learn, but soon becomes an easy to manage one’s way of life.

Anyone, with a health condition or aspirations to live healthy and prevent disease, should have their current diet reviewed to learn what needs to occur to improve their diet and to achieve their health goals.

Physical Medicine

Physical Medicine and manipulation is the use of hands-on therapies, similar to that of Chiropractic doctors, to affect the structural components of the body. Naturopathic manipulation and mobilization help to restore joints into rightful resting locations, remove compression of nerves, reduce inflammation and relax spamming muscles. Proper structure is healthy function. Anyone experiencing chronic pain or a degenerative health condition would benefit from physical medicine in their overall health care.

Physical Medicine may also include therapies such as: hydrotherapy, massage therapy, physiotherapy, ultrasound, cold laser and micro currents.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is based on 5000 years of Traditional Chinese Medicine which realized long ago that the body is not only physical but energetic. Acupuncture is the use of needles placed at specific points in the body to remove blockages. This promotes the healthy flow of energy (Qi) through the body and its channels, called meridians. When energy flow is blocked, the body becomes imbalanced and can result in the manifestation of symptoms and disease. Therefore, by re-establishing smooth flow of energy through the body, health can be restored on a physical, mental and emotional level. As illness and wellness are interwoven with how energy flows in the body, acupuncture is often a beneficial element of any complete health and wellness program.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle management is an essential responsibility of a family physician and is absolutely paramount in treating the underlying cause of most diseases. Lifestyle habits must regularly be assessed and modified to meet the individual needs of the patient. It is the ongoing relationship with your caregiver that allows for the better understanding of the core issues and obstacles in one’s life. Diet, exercise, sleep habits, substance use and abuse, stress, work issues, relationship issues, personal hobbies and environmental toxin exposures are lifestyle factors that are modified to optimize healing and wellness.

Biotherapeutic Drainage

Biotherapeutic Drainage is based on a two hundred year-old system of medicine known as homeopathy. It is readily used by millions of people throughout Europe, Asian and the Middle Eastern countries. It utilizes small amounts of natural substances to communicate with the body and stimulate the body’s self healing ability. Biotherapeutic drainage remedies are complex homeopathic formulations that are specifically designed to cleanse the body and target desired tissues for optimal healing. Supporting the body in the removal of both internal metabolic toxins and external environmental toxins is essential in all disease conditions, preventative healthcare and healthy aging.

Bioidentical Hormones

Many disease conditions are the result of hormone imbalances. Individuals, who do not have a defined disease, though are generally unwell, may be experiencing hormone imbalance. Hormonal disruption puts the body’s regulatory functions out of balance. Bioidentical hormones are identical in chemical structure and similar in action to the hormones found in the human body. Because they are identical, the action of the natural hormone is relatively gentle, safe and effective.

Symptoms that my indicate a sex hormonal imbalance and may benefit from bioidentical sex hormones include: hot flashes; night sweats; vaginal dryness; brain fog; memory problems; depression; tender breasts; water retention; irritability; weight gain; headaches; constipation dry skin; fatigue; low lido; dry scalp; menstrual issues; poor sleep and a general state of unwellness.

Symptoms that may indicate hypothyroid hormone imbalances and may require the use of desiccated thyroid and/or liothyroxine (T3) include: fatigue; depression; poor mental concentration; menstrual irregularities; PMS; infertility; easy weight gain; cold extremities; course dry hair; dry rough skin; high cholesterol; high blood pressure; constipation; low libido; sluggishness; headaches; muscle aches; weakness; recurrent infections; hypoglycemic; asthma; erectile dysfunction; memory loss; polycystic ovary syndrome; allergic rhinitis; tinnitus; vertigo; atherosclerosis and chest pain.

To determine if you are a bioidentical hormone candidate, a complete health history, physical exam and hormone testing is required.

Pharmaceutical (Prescription) Drugs

Properly prescribed, administered and used Pharmaceutical drugs have proven to be very beneficial to mankind. Prescription drugs have become the primary therapy in many mainstream practices. Overuse in many instances has resulted in the resistance to certain prescribed medication not being as effective as it once was. The side effects of certain drugs also merit attention and consideration prior to use. In the province of British Columbia, Naturopathic physicians are trained and licensed in the use of prescriptions for pharmaceutical medicine similar to that of a medical doctor.

In today’s world, to have a physician who is knowledgeable about both prescription drugs and natural medicines is advantageous. This knowledge allows the holistic physician to determine what kind of therapy is best suited for the condition at any particular time or stage of illness. There are many interactions that may occur between conventional and naturopathic medicine. Some are synergistic and some are contraindicated. Having a physician who understands the benefits and risks is essential.

The need for pharmaceutical intervention is determined on an individual bases. The right therapy, at the right time, for the right patient, is determined within the context of respecting the patient’s right to choose. With the integration of naturopathic healthcare reduction of doses necessary to achieve desired therapeutic response often results, with some patients no longer having need for their prescriptions.
Note: Always consult your physician before stopping any prescription medication.
