Diabetes (Type 2) is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and high insulin levels leading to other metabolic abnormalities and complications. Over 9 million Canadians are diagnosed as having diabetes. It is the epidemic disease of our culture, as a result of our Western Lifestyle . Though diabetes does not often start with debilitating symptoms, it is the number one cause of many devastating health issues such as kidney failure, blindness, amputation and a debilitating pain condition known as peripheral neuropathy. If underlying causes are addressed early in the disease process, diabetes can usually be cured. Dietary modification, regular exercise and proper supplementation are required.
